VIRUS
The definition for a Virus: A program of piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes.
· Viruses are able to replicate themselves.
· All computer viruses are manmade.
· Viruses that can easily copy themselves over and over again are relatively easy to produce.
Simple viruses are dangerous because of its function of using all available memory bringing the system to a halt. More dangerous types of viruses are capable of moving across networks bypassing security systems. Computer viruses can be found from opening just a regular email. If a message is malicious, you will find your computer being affected by a virus. In order to stop viruses from opening your emails, there are settings that can be made to not accept attachments to be opened upon opening the email. Installing a certain type of anti Virus software is one of the best solutions.
TROJAN HORSE
Definition for a Trojan horse: A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Trojan horses cannot replicate themselves but they are just as destructive as normal viruses. The term came from the giant wooden horse that the Greeks made to trick the Trojans into thinking it was a peace offering.
Protect yourself by installing a firewall. This acts as a filter to see what has been going in and out of your computer. Delete all the files and do the reformate stage.
WORM
In a computer, a worm is a self replicating virus that does not alter but residing in active memory and duplicates itself. They are usually part of an operating system. They are automatic and invisible to the user. Its spreads using send mail, fingerd, and rsh/rexec through the internet.
Computer worms that spread through vulnerabilities in the network service can best be protected by keeping up to date installing patches providing the operation system and vendors. Computer worms spread like Trojan horses can best be defended by not opening email attachments
PHISHING
Phishing is the act of sending an email to a user falsely claimed to be legit. The reason for this email is to scam the use for his/her personal information. It’s a theft scam on the internet. They are sent to your email inbox and hopes that you are unaware that it is a scam. They will say u already have an account in some legitimate company and asks you to update your personal information so they can update their database. Phishing is one of the fastest growing problems on the internet and so many people became victims.
Avoid phishing by:
· If you receive and email asking for your updates on your personal billing information try not to reply or click any other link in the email body.
· Check for misspelled words or any other mistakes in the links URL or company website name.
· If you think the email is a legitimate one, call the company’s customer service department and verify it before providing any personal information in the site.
· If you believe that it is a legitimate mail, before you provide any sensitive information in the website check for the “lock” icon on the browser’s status bar. This is to ensure that the information is secure during transmission.
· If you unknowingly supplied any information, contact your credit card provider and bank without any delay.
